From Lyons to Lodz

Mac's story.

Confronting the ghosts of a looted past

Retracing a tragic course

This is a two-part story about Vietnam veteran Gerald McDonald of Lyons, Illinois, and his journey to the Jewish ghetto in Lodz, Poland. They call him Mac. He is very ill from having contracted Hepatitis C while serving in Vietnam.

Prior to World War II, Mac's great-great uncle was a businessman and art collector in Prague until the Nazis took him away from his life. And took away his life. All just because he was Jewish.

Chicago Tribune art critic Howard Reich tells a very moving and emotional story as he follows Mac across Eastern Europe. Lots of great pictures. Definitely worth the read.
