New Year's Eve

It is New Year's Eve and I am in for the night and, yes, I like it.

Traditions gone by. When I was a kid, New Year's Eve was the one night of the year we played Monopoly. In our family, we played cutthroat style. My mom would make her world famous macaroni salad. My dad would fix my brother and I each old fashioned kiddie cocktails (or kitty cocktail, as I still call them), consisting of 7-Up, maraschino cherry, slice of lemon, wedge of orange, and a dash of Angostura bitters, hold the bourbon, hold the sugar. Grand hijinks ensued, not the least of which included party hats, noise makers, and bank robberies. Woo! Yeah, you had to be there.

At midnight, we'd all go out on the front porch where my dad would light and throw a few M-80s (real cherry bombs). Of course, kids being kids, my brother and I never wanted the night to end. So, my dad, sort of a big kid himself, and never one to disappoint, would fire several rounds from his 30-ot-6 into the air, while my brother and I stood way back, mouths agape, and my mom stood inside the door saying, "that's enough."

When my girls were growing up, we basically did the same things. But, instead of M-80s and rifles, we used sparklers and cap guns. I wonder if they'll do the same things when they have kids.

Happy New Year Everybody!
