24th MEU

The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit has gone ashore. That's the unit of the young man whose e-mail I posted earlier this week. At that time, I had no idea they would ever go ashore. It's one thing to be doing a job on a boat out in the middle of some vast body of water. This is another thing... I'm scared for him. Scared for all of them.

From the 24th MEU web site:

24th MEU's deployment has been extended past its projected return date of 1 May.

The MEU is currently conducting operations ashore in the Iraqi theater.

Updates on the MEU's location and activities will be provided on this site consistent with operational security.

And from an article today in the Kansas City Star:

NEAR NASIRIYAH, Iraq [...] The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit arrived with its 2,500 troops, augmenting a 5,000-member Marine task force in the area. (Coalition flexes its muscle in skies over Iraq)
