I'm not a big movie goer any more. I used to be. But, it's probably been about five years since I went to see a movie at a movie theater.

There is one movie I wanted to make a point to see. Stevie is more of a documentary than a movie. When director Steven James (Hoop Dreams) attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, he was a Big Brother to a troubled kid named Stevie. The director goes back about ten years later to find out what Stevie was doing with his life. It's not at all pretty. So, he made a movie about him and his trouble and his family and the dire poverty that is Southern Illinois.

Our local paper ran an AP article on the movie about a month ago (Acclaimed filmmaker examines poor family in rural southern Illinois). Then, a couple weeks ago the New York Times reviewed the movie (In Rural Illinois, Chronicling One Man's Slow Fall). The NY Times wasn't as kind as the AP article, but it reminded me to check and see if and when the movie was coming to Springfield.

A quick check of our local movie house company's web site (Kerasotes) revealed that yes, indeed, Stevie was a coming attraction. We don't get a lot of documentaries around here. We don't get much more than big Hollywood productions around here. I guess that's part of the reason I don't go to the movies a lot any more. Needless to say, I was quite surprised to read that Stevie would be here on April 11.

Tonight I checked the movie times for this weekend and there's no mention of Stevie. I'm not at all surprised. I checked the now showing and coming attractions thinking that maybe it was coming later or maybe to a different town, but it's not even mentioned. I guess I'll just wait for the video.
