Battle of the telecoms

There's a major battle going on right now between the phone companies in Illinois. On one side is SBC, formerly SBC Ameritech, formerly Ameritech, formerly Illinois Bell. On the other side is, apparently, all the other phone companies, including MCI and AT+T. Every single day we are baraged with a slew of television and radio commercials where each side slams the other. My daughter pegged the voice on one SBC TV commercial as that of Tommy Lee Jones.

As with most Illinois politics, this war has turned dirty. That is, both sides have lost their credibility with the mud slinging. It's easy to imagine that this media blitz, which is aimed at consumers, is costing millions. Each side wants us to call our legislators and influence them against the other side. What it boils down to is a bunch a mega corporations gunning for control and a bigger helping of Illinois bucks.

For a better understanding (sorta), see SJR: SBC wants more for line use; Proposal would nearly double rate for competitors.

Yeah, we had (and maybe still are having) the same "battle" here in Michigan. Ameritech/SBC/MonopolyLovers don't like giving up their territory. They feel like the indians did when Columbus (or whoever) came to america... So far, I feel that the consumer is the one which wins. I've been without SBC/Ameritech for 2 years almost now, and have not looked back.
