Patti needs a cause

Quick! Think! No, not really. The first lady of Illinois already has a cause: Flowers to beautify the highways. It’s so ... what is the word? Dainty. I’m really reluctant to criticize her. I mean, she’s a mom and she’s married to G-Rod and all that goes with that. But, she had to know that this would open her up to unnecessary criticism.

As reported in SJR: Flower power: First lady pushes state beautification, she said:

”Illinois loses so many tourists every year to people that go to Michigan and Indiana and Wisconsin....”

Really? Where did that idea come from? Can we see the facts and figures on that?

”This is coming directly out of the existing budget for IDOT," she added. "It's just a reallocation of existing dollars to a better use....”

I can’t lay my hands on the exact figure right now, but I heard on the radio they’re talking $1.7 million. My advice would be get behind something she can raise awareness and funds for. Instead, the state is going to write a check for the flowers. Ahh.

I really wish she would have picked a cause that was a little more socially relevant. Like, cracking down on meth labs, or gang wars, or ethanol promotion, or literacy, or teen pregnancy. She has an opportunity to have a real voice in the political process and make some changes or at least start the ball rolling on getting some things changed. Instead, she chose flowers.

P.S. The governor’s mansion has breathtakingly beautiful gardens.

P.P.S. I know, I know. I stuck ethanol in with the socially relevant.

Yeah, all states could use more meth labs...Oh wait, er, um...That's not what you were saying, was it?!

Grrrrr...don't encourage them to keep putting the pseudophedrine behind counters----my chronic sinusitis has turned into a giant nuisance due to trying to control meth labs.

Write her and tell her she is *way* behind the times. That was Lady Bird Johnson's cause years ago in Texas, and to this day we have bluebonnets lining the highways in the spring, and other flowers in the summer months.

I will say though that we used to leave Illinois to head to the Wisconsin Dells when I was a kid - so maybe there is some truth to that. However, I don't think beautiful roads would have kept us in the state - they would have just made the drive more pleasant.

Instead of making the roads pretty, why don't they work on making them better? Who needs potholes?
