Nobel watch

Wow! Out of 165 nominees, the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize committee has included former Illinois governor George Ryan in the five finalists. Ryan was nominated for his actions against the death penalty. The whole thing is a big secret, so there's no easy way to confirm the finalists. The St. Louis Post Dispatch is reporting "Pope John Paul II, pop star Bono, French President Jacques Chirac, the European Union and Cuban dissident Oswalda Paya" in addition to Ryan. (Former Illinois Gov. George Ryan is Nobel finalist, sources say.) The winner will be announced in Norway this coming Friday at 11:00 a.m. Norway time, or 4:00 a.m. Central Time. The prize includes a check for $1.3 million.
