Recently indicted former Illinois governor George Ryan appeared at the Sundance Film Festival tonight to promote a new movie. The movie is about him and his transformation from a pro-death penalty politician to a governor who issued blanket clemency to 167 prisonoers on death row. Three of the death row prisoners were found to be innocent and walked free. Another would have walked free, except he had to serve time for another crime. Several others were resentenced. The rest had their sentences commuted to life in prison. This happened about a year ago right now. Obviously, there's a lot more to it. And if my facts aren't exactly right, it's because my memory is a little rusty.

This is still a very touchy subject around here. While it's easy to get excited for the men who walked free, my heart goes out to the familes of the victims of the others for having justice ripped out from under them.
