Yellow pages

For some unknown reason, one of my bossís sons called me today from his cell phone to get a phone number for a local company. Heís a business owner, but not the same business as ours. Iím not sure why he called me when he has a staff of his own. Maybe because my office number was the most recent he dialed. A little earlier, he had called for my co-worker about another matter. Anyway, because I usually have at least one Google window open, I was able to give him the number in a matter of seconds.

That got me thinking about all those yellow page ads. And the companies that buy them. And the people that sell them. Iíd bet in this town of about 115,000, there are millions of dollars in yellow page advertising. Maybe tens of millions.

Several companies provide phone books in this town, not the least of which is the primary phone company, SBC. Since Google has made it so easy to get phone numbers, I probably havenít opened the phone book once. It's all about time and convenience. That means Iím not seeing those advertisements all those companies paid for. Iím sure Iím not the only one. Of course, one doesnít necessarily have to use the yellow pages to look up a business phone number in the phone book. I would imagine most, if not all companies, are listed somewhere in the white pages. But still, this has to be something yellow page publishers are thinking about. If not the publishers, hopefully the advertisers are. Or, should be.
