The recruiter

One of my side jobs is job recruiter for a local car battery manufacturer. Iím not sure how I got the position since Iíve never worked at the company. Although, I have bought a few car batteries there. Maybe thatís why.

Anyway, three or four times a year I go to my old high school during lunchtime to try to recruit kids to enter the car battery manufacturing trade. For some unexplainable reason, I always pick cold and rainy days for this task. And, because there are never any parking spaces near the building, I have to park in the farthest spot in the farthest lot and lug two folding chairs and a card table that I took from my mom who bought them at the Green Stamp Store in the 60's.

Thereís a vacant corner in the bustling cafeteria thatís always reserved for recruiters: Army, Navy, college, battery. With a lot of effort and noise, I manage to set up the card table and chairs.

Just as I sit down to regale the unruly throngs of high school kids with tales of glory from the car battery business, I look around and realize I havenít brought any job applications with me. Leaving the card table and chairs behind, I quickly run back to the car, drive to the shop, grab some applications, and speed back to the school. Unfortunately, lunch is always over and the kids have gone back to class by the time I get back to the school.

Then I wake up.
