Human, please

J-Walk is in the process of disconnecting various household services in preparation for moving. As often happens in these cases, you have to go through several phone menus before you get the option you want. Sometimes you never get the option you want.

Someone who once worked for one of those huge conglomerate corporations gave me an unpublicized tip for dealing with unruly phone menus. This doesn't work with every company, but with some of these phone menus, if, during the menu process, you say "human" or "person" or "agent," the menu process stops and you get rung through to a human. I’ve used it successfully with Sprint PCS and at least one bank. Even if it doesn’t work, it can be a great source of amusement if there other people in the room.
