Nixon on this day

Thirty-six years ago today, on August 8, 1968, at the Republican National Convention in Miami, a jubilant Richard M. Nixon was nominated for president of the United States. (A month later, he would appear on the comedy TV show, Laugh-In, where he would exclaim, "sock it to me!")

Thirty years ago today, on August 8, 1974, a very somber Nixon appeared from the Oval Office live on television before the nation and announced that he would resign the office of the presidency at noon the next day.

From the discussions I have had with Congressional and other leaders, I have concluded that because of the Watergate matter I might not have the support of the Congress that I would consider necessary to back the very difficult decisions and carry out the duties of this office in the way the interests of the Nation would require.
