Labor Day

On this day, the first Monday of September, Americans celebrate Labor Day.

The exterminator.

The guy who takes care of the bugs and rodents at my office should be laborer of the year. He's only been on the job for three months, the previous bug guy having retired after a lengthy career in bugs and rodents. I don't know his name. I call him the bug man. He keeps us safe from more than the bugs, but somehow mouse man or rat man just doesn't sound right.

The bug man has a natural enthusiasm about his work that I don't see very often. Actually, I don't think I've ever known anyone who seems to genuinely enjoy his work as much. I'm curious about what he did before becoming bug man. Maybe he's just grateful to have a job. It's a difficult job. It's dirty. It's creepy. There's definitely no glory in inspecting for mouse droppings. Maybe he was an owl in another life.

He deserves to be recognized. Therefore, Bug Man, I hereby nominate you as laborer of the year. Your work and the attitude you bring to the job as you breeze through my office once a month, is very much appreciated. Thank you, Bug Man. You have my total respect.

I've never actually seen an exterminator working at my place of employment although I've seen bugs. The place is so huge I'm sure there has to be one bug man around on occasion. As for why he enjoys his work so much... maybe he gets a buzz off pesticide.
