Comment removal requests

Something is afoot. In the last 24 hours I've received two separate e-mails from two separate people who claim to have posted comments on this blog requesting that their comments be removed.

In both cases, the commenters used both their first and last names in the comments. Additionally, both have uncommon surnames. I checked both comments, and neither one wrote anything incriminating. Of course, without more information, I can't really say that their concern is incrimination.

My theory is that these folks are in the process of applying for a job, or perhaps going through something like a background check. They are concerned that their names will be Googled and want to remove any reference to anything they might have said on the web. Does that make sense?

Even if I was inclined to remove comments in these types of cases, there are other factors to consider. One, there would have to be a compelling reason. Two, how could I be assured that the person making the request is the same person that made the comment. And, three, even if I deleted the comments from this web site, that doesn't necessarily remove the comments from things like Google's cache.
