Mysterious line object

Is it a bug? A hair? A missile? A secret government project? A wrinkle in time? Some folks as The Asterisk* are trying to figure out what the strange streak is in the December 7th Astronomy Picture of the Day:

Meteor experts don't think it's a meteor. Atmospheric scientists don't think it's lightning. The photographer insists that the streak and flash on the above image has not been created digitally. So what is it? Nobody is sure.

It might be exhaust from a flying fish. Just an idea.
