Day Three Rehab

It has become clear that the rehab facility does not have enough staff to give the kind of care my mom requires.

The facility is severely understaffed. That is not an exaggeration. Tonight (Thursday), the nurse, who is an LPN and not an RN, said she has 60 to 65 patients in her care. In addition to the LPN, there were two aides. Aides are not qualified to give medical treatment. It's also worth mentioning that the LPN said she was working two 16 hour shifts back to back.

When Allie and I were visiting with my mom tonight, a situation occurred where my mom needed immediate medical attention and the LPN was on a coffee break. At the same time, another patient, who is on a ventilator, had his ventilator crap out. A little before all this, a large elderly man became unruly and trapped a small elderly woman in a room by blocking the door with his wheelchair. She shouted at the man, "I'm not going to do you!"

I called my brother at home. He called my mom's doctor. Shortly thereafter, an RN from another "wing" showed up. Shortly after that, the director, also an RN, came in from home. The LPN was made to defend herself.

I'm quite certain we've now been labeled as troublemakers.

We're talking with my mom's doctor to see what can be done.
