Day Nine Rehab - More

My mom's nurse last night was the same one from last week who, at that time, had 60 to 65 patients. Last night she said there are now 70 patients in her care.

We asked her if there was an RN in another wing. She said, yes, and that RN has about 30 patients. Obviously, I don't know how this is supposed to work. But, it seems out of whack that an RN has 30 patients when an LPN has 70. I do realize that some LPNs are probably more capable than some RNs.

We're supposed to have a meeting with certain staff at the place this Saturday. Presumably, we will get to air our grievances and make sure we're all on the same page.

Anyway back to last night's nurse. She said that of those 70 patients, 14 have tracheostomies. I didn't ask (out of fear what the answer would be), but I can't help but wonder, what if all 14 of those get into trouble at the same time and she's the only one there to tend to them. How does she decide who goes first.

I said, I heard you have one patient on a ventilator. She said, "yeah, but that's no big deal." Or something like that. Ahh, it's good to know that a vent is no big deal.

Reading your blog, Marie, about the travails you're having with your mother's rehab facility really hits close to home. From October through February I experienced similar situations. I sincerely hope your mother gets to go home.
