Base closings

We just found out that the 183rd Fighter Wing of the Illinois Air National Guard is being shifted from Springfield to Fort Wayne. To clarify, they're saying just the planes (F-16's) and the people that work in and on them, and not the entire operation will be moved. It's expected that 260 jobs will be directly affected.

More on this as it becomes known.

Update a short time later: A reading of a WEEK.COM article (Peoria Survives Cuts For Now), might give one the impression that the Pentagon has declared war on military workers in Illinois: "... Illinois stands to lose nearly 2,700 military and civilian jobs...."

Second update: This is big time stuff around these parts. In trying to figure out just what's going on, my co-worker and I are tossing a few ideas around. He says it's because we dropped the bomb on Canada. What he's really referring to is a 2002 friendly fire incident in Afghanistan where a 183rd crew mistook gunnery practice by Canadian soldiers on the ground for the enemy fire. Four Canadians died and eight others were injured. I told him that's not very likely since, as of yet, Canada isn't calling the shots on our military bases. At least, I don't think they are. Personally, I don't think it's about anything that happened in the past. It's more likely to be some sort of political preemption.
