Greatest American

The Greatest American Show will attempt to answer the question, Who is the Greatest American. It starts with a list of 100, including people such as, Malcolm X, Oprah Winfrey, Sam Walton, Barack Obama, Abraham Lincoln, Rush Limbaugh, Martin Luther King, Jr., Michael Jackson, and Thomas Jefferson, to name but a few.

That is quite a list. Probably just about everyone on the list is or was great in their field. On the other hand, there are a more than a handful on the list who, I'm sure, might be considered scoundrels by more than a few people. I'm trying to be nice here. In any event, I'm sure there are some on the list who will prove themselves not as great as we once thought they were.

Quite possibly, the real greatest American isn't even on the list. It could be somebody's mother or even somebody's typing teacher.

The show airs every Sunday in June at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on the Discovery Channel. It will be hosted by Matt Lauer and features stops from the bus tour. The bus stopped in Springfield this morning. I was there and took pictures. (Click the thumbnails for larger views.) After each show, people can vote for their Greatest American via the web, phone, or text message.

There's a blog. Dare I predict this? Okay. All future media extravaganzas will have a blog and a bus.

To whoever the greatest American turns out to be, here's some advice: Never forget those you stepped on on the way up, because they most certainly won't forget you on your way down.
