To burn or not to burn

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution on Wednesday that would make burning of the U.S. flag unconstitutional. From there it goes to the Senate. If it passes there, it goes to the states for ratification.

This is yet another measure to limit the rights of American citizens.

Dave at Eleventh Hour has some excellent responses to those who would take away this right.

The American President, Andrew Shepherd (played by Michael Douglas) said:

You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country cannot just be a flag. The symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Now show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then you can stand up and sing about the land of the free.

It may just be a movie, but those are powerful words. Instead of taking them away, let's protect the precious freedoms that we have.
