Gay parade grows up

Back when I lived in Chicago, the Gay Pride Parade (was it even called that then?) was still quite new. As I recall, there were basically about ten or eleven gay guys walking down the street, huddled together, looking half emboldened, half scared, and about a hundred totally obnoxious lookers on, with their cheering, jeering, and leering.

Things have changed considerably. Note this fabulous report by the Southport Squealer who went to his first Gay Pride Parade this weekend:

One particular float really sticks in my head: it was G-Rod himself, Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich. It was fun to contrast his with Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn, especially because Rod was swarmed with police protection, while Quinn was guarded by a guy in assless chaps.

Blogging at its best. Illinois politics at it best.

(Side note: Saw the Southport Squealer mentioned on a blog about a month or so ago and started reading it based on the name alone. Glad I did. It's an excellent blog.)
