Old Coke

Just a note to members of the younger generation among us. In case you don't already know, and I suspect most of you don't, the current Coke television commercial is not some song they bought off the shelf. It actually is original material. Just really old original material they updated for your generation. You know, it's the one with the cellist and the white guy rapping.

The song that goes, "I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke," dates back to 1971. It's from one of the most successful and unforgettable Coke commercials in history, if not in all of advertising history. More than 30 years later, whenever I pick up a Coke, I find myself singing that song. Of course, now, I'll be rapping it. No, not really.

I'd like to buy the world a home and furnish it with love. Grow apple trees and honey bees, and snow white turtle doves. I'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony. I'd like to buy the world a Coke and keep it company. It's the real thing, Coke is what the world wants today.
