Independence Day 2005

There is a lot to think about on this Independence Day. What do you think of? Me? Among other things, wars and flags and fireworks and potato salad and freedom. Not necessarily in that order.

  • Dave has a very cool photo of our beautiful flag and the words to U.S. Blues by the Grateful Dead.

Some of my most memorable Fourth of July's were, as a kid, we would go to the lake, throw a blanket on a hill, lay back and watch the fireworks. Of course, this being Springfield, the humidity was so high that the smoke from the bombs hung heavy in the air until you couldn't breathe anymore. But, it was so much fun.

The last time I went to the 4th of July fireworks near me it was as humid and calm as it could be. After the third or fourth bomb bursting in air, the smoke was so thick it obscured the rest of the show including the finale. It's hard to believe smoke could obscure things to the point that all you can see are vague flashes of light.
