Computer security

From the Department of Just in Case Something Heard on a Saturday Morning Radio Show May Be Easily Misconstrued Department.

As of this past Spring, Download.com stopped offering programs for download that contain adware. See: Spyware Confidential: The news is out, and so is adware for more information.

We would all be well advised to know the difference between adware and spyware. These evils take many forms.

Some blogs I read on this subject:

Tips and tools to secure Windows computers:

One of the tools I use to find and eliminate spyware on my computer is Spybot Search + Destroy.

Probably, the best thing anyone can do is know what's on their computer and check out anything they don't recall putting there.

Also, don't be afraid to run more than one spyware detection/removal tool -- the two I'm thinking of are Spybot and Adaware. Take advantage of the monitoring capabilities of Spybot but remember that they work per account instead of for the whole machine. The free version of Adaware is more limited but will still detect some things that Spybot doesn't. Actually, that goes both ways.

Man, I feel like I'm still at work :)
