Beggars' banquet

I had a little picnic in the park after work Wednesday night. This is a photo essay of same. Click each image for larger 640 x 480 version.

Picnic pizza. Fans of pizza far and wide (wide, get it?) will recognize this as a Gabatoni's large half pepperoni and half other stuff. This is my favorite pizza and one of the reasons I moved back to Springfield. Hours later and I can still taste it.

Picnic pizza partner. Friends and family will recognize my youngest daughter. She may be shy, but she's perfected the art of begging. I, on the other hand, have perfected the art of ordering, picking up, and paying for pizza. Hence, picnic in the park.

Pond and fountain. Very pleasant, unlike the half dead tree behind the fountain.

Bi-level drinking fountain. We had a lengthy and in-depth discussion regarding the shorter water fountain (pictured). It is about 10 inches high. What on earth could it be for? It's too short for even toddlers. We concluded that it must be for joggers to cool their hot feet in after a run.

Brown squirrel. Another begger makes an appearance. He went wild for our pizza crust. There was a grey squirrel nearby, but he only observed us from a distance. (For white squirrels, you have to go to Olney, Illinois.)

Ducklings. These were the sweetest baby ducks and not at all shy. Their mother didn't particularly care for the crusty pizza crust. These two babies were surprisingly quite smart about it, though. They each picked up a piece of crust and when they realized it was too hard, they carried it over to the water fountain where they soaked it until it was soft enough.

Plaque on our bench.
