Of sky banners and Teamsters and Deja Vu

Jerome Prophet put up a very cool photo he took during this year's state fair of a plane tailing a message from the Teamsters. As usual, JP has an excellently stated message appropriate for the times in which we live, to go with his picture.

Well, his photo reminded me of a similar photo I took during the fair a few years ago. That was on my old computer, and I don't have copies of those old entries on this computer. Fortunately, I was able to search Google and found it (last photo on the page, Saturday, August 17, 2002). Not the same message, but similar.

I see that I thought the plane was about 1,000 overhead. But, now, I think it was much lower. Like maybe 500 feet. I never blogged the details before, but, I remember it like it was just yesterday. I was the only one on the new section of Stanford when I saw the plane overhead. I pulled the car over to the side of the road, got out and started aiming my camera. I know the pilot saw me, because he circled around and came in really close. After several shots, I waved at him and he flew away. It was kind of an amazing thing.

I didn't see the Teamsters' plane this year. I did, however, see another message plane on a couple different occasions. I took these photos in the late afternoon of Friday August 12, 2005. Also during the fair. Obviously, the plane was much higher than 500 feet when I took them.

This plane was working for the local Deja Vu and was trailing a banner for one of their visiting exotic dancers. There's a story behind this. I think it goes like: State fair officials, no matter which party is in office, has a long history of denying the Vu's application for some kind of presence on the fairgrounds. What the Vu wants to do at the fair, I'm not really sure. But, as a little way of getting back, the Vu is able to defeat the government's decision by flying this banner all about the town and around the fairgrounds during fair week.

I like your aerial photographs. I just took one, and posted it.

I think I'll repost it - I made my photo so small you can't really see anything.

Looks like you paid more atention to your subject than I did. I took two photos of the Teamster's plane, and only one came out.

The digital camera's firmware jumped in, and in my photo, which you can find on my website, kicked in and youo see this dark blue along the top of the photo - happens when there's lens flair too.

Oh well, digital cameras have many pluses, and a few drawbacks too.

End the end I decided that I actually liked the effect the camera had created, and posted it.

Did you use a tripod for your shots?

They are very clear!

Thanks, JP. I don't have a tripod. Usually, I just prop one or both elbows on something and hope for the best. I think the lettering on the banner looks blurry. Could be their choice of color, though. Thanks, again.
