When the Levee Breaks

Those who have been softly signing "When the Levee Breaks" for the last almost two weeks might think Led Zeppelin is the end all to be all in such matters. Not at all.

As a matter of fact, the original Levee Breaks song by Kansas Joe McCoy is in the public domain and is a free download at PublicDomain4U.

About the song:

Recorded in 1929, with Memphis Minnie on second guitar. The threat from flooding was very real for the mainly black field hands who lived on the low ground in sight of the river - the plantation owners' homes were safe on higher ground. (Blues Lyrics On Line)

That's the one I've been singing.

Love that site. Great song, too: Recorded just two years after the flood that sent thousands of people onto the top of the levees to get away from the Mississippi River floods.
