Schneider on rails

I always wonder what's on these freight trains, where they started, where they're going, and who's paying.

Several years ago I was working in an old Queen Anne style house that had been converted to a law office. One day I looked out the window and spotted an elderly couple on the sidewalk. The lady was talking to the man and pointing to my building. I went out on the porch to talk to them.

The lady had lived her early teenage years in the house next door more than 60 years before. They were living in Seattle and taking a cross-country tour to visit all the places they had lived. She was explaining to her husband how she played with the kids who lived in my building. I offered them a tour of the building, which they accepted.

When we went back outside, a freight train rolled down the tracks just a block away. The lady made a comment to me I'll never forget. She was so surprised that Springfield still had trains running through downtown. She said, "especially when all the other towns had moved their trains to the outskirts."

There's a railroad crossing about a crow's mile from my house. Late at night I can hear the trains rumble by and whistle at the crossing. I love hearing that and always wonder where they're going and what it's like to be an engineer driving a long train at 3 AM. Sometimes I wish it were me.
