Look Back Springfield: Conn's

I just put up a new post at Look Back Springfield about what I recall what was Conn's Cafeteria in downtown Springfield.

I was reminded of Conn's when I saw some pictures of the area on Springfield Rewind, a new weblog which documents, with photographs, Springfield of yesterday and today. It's an excellent project.

I just want to take this opportunity to say a few words about memory. Specifically, my memory. There are some inconsistencies. Some things I should have forgotten, like phone numbers that have been disconnected for 20 years, safe combinations, and my first license plate, try as I might, I can't seem to forget. Other things, like my entire eighth grade year of school, I can't remember anything about. I remember just about everything from seventh grade and ninth grade, but the eighth grade somehow got erased.

I can't explain why, but I'm concerned I might have got the name of Conn's Cafeteria wrong. I should probably run down to the library tomorrow and look it up in an old phone book. But, will I remember. Heh.

Ah -- memory. Interesting how that works, and doesn't. But I think you have to go with what you got; and when you write about something like the old cafeteria, there's a way that just focusing on a half-remembered place or incident dredges up lost details.
