Looking for Lincoln in old newsprint

A find and an idea.

First, the find. Harper's Magazine has put on line its article about Abraham Lincoln's assassination from June of 1865: "'The Death of Lincoln' - Posted on Monday, June 7, 2004. The assassination of the president, and the pursuit of Booth. Originally from 'Monthly Record of Current Events,' Harper's New Monthly Magazine, vol. 31, iss. 181, June 1865." Actually, I've been aware of this article for some time. But, having run across it again tonight gave me an idea.

The idea: Springfield's daily newspaper, the State Journal Register, friend to Abraham Lincoln, might consider putting online its archived articles that mention Lincoln during his lifetime (scans and texts). This would be an excellent way to complement the Lincoln Papers Collection at the Library of Congress, the Looking for Lincoln Heritage Coalition, and the projects of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission. Or, maybe they're already doing this.

P.S. I'm available to work on this.
