News as sensation

I've been following the situation in Miami this afternoon on CNN. I don't really have a comment on what happened. I just want to make an observation about Wolf Blitzer. Rarely do I watch him. When I do watch weekday CNN, it's usually Lou Dobbs.

I had no idea Wolf was such a sensationalist. He's got it down pat. His questions are framed in such a way to cause alarm; to make the viewer upset; to be disturbing; to stir conspiracy theories. I always thought he had a reputation as a newsman.

There are no newsmen anymore, only showmen.
