A little Captain in me

captain_morgan_price.jpg There's a new round of Captain Morgan Rum TV commercials. I'm guessing it's a new round since I can't recall having ever seen a previous round. But, there could have been.

The Captain Morgan Rum mascot is reminiscent of the captain of a Carribean rum running ship. I'm only guessing this since I've never even seen a Carribean rum ship, much less a captain thereof. The Captain is a manly man, appealing to both men and women. I'm guessing that, too, but thought I would throw it in anyway, Instead of trying to describe the Captain's clothes, just imagine your favorite swashbuckler dressed in all red velvet. Got it? Okay. That's the Captain.

The commercials feature everyday people suddenly striking a pose where they stand on one leg with the knee of the other leg bent and foot up, as if resting on a rum barrel. But, there's no barrel. Just air between their foot and the floor.

Of course, the way they're standing is the same way the Captain can often be found standing. Except, the Captain has his foot propped upon a rum barrel.

Somehow, the Captain has pervaded these people's lives so much that they've taken to imitating his stance. The commercial slogan goes something like, "Got a little Captain in you?"

And, now, having seen this commercial several times, I find myself compelled to sometimes stand around with one foot as though it's on a rum barrel. In my case, the Captain hasn't pervaded my life. Just the commercials. I'm hoping I'm not the only one doing this. As yet, though, I've yet to find anyone else standing this way.

Note 1: The Captain has a blog. It hasn't been updated since he took a blogging break to do his taxes last April 15th: The Captain's Blog.

Note 2: I can't drink rum since I overdid it at a friend's birthday party (years before the "drink responsibly" ad campaign, and sadly, pre-drinking age.)

Oops! Posted on the wrong comment! I should have posted the following here.

Well shiver me timbers! Maybe I should put a little Captain in my eggnog.

Wow. I mean, uh, wow.

I would have imagined the people in the commercials have the rum barrel hallucination after they imbibe Captain Morgan. But you're having the rum barrel hallucination cold sober?

I'm sorry to have to break this to you Marie, but you may be the only person hoisting your leg in the air to the top of an imaginary barrel.

Maybe some Captain Morgan will help?

Google "Henry Morgan" and "pirate." I believe that's the real historical antecedent to the fanciful rum-purveying character.

I have to check again with my son about particulars, but he said the captain's wares are popular among underage drinkers at the University of Oregon; I think he said the misdemeanor imbibers refer to the product as "Ca-Mo," ("Ca" pronounced "kay").

Which foot, Marie? The good Captain uses his left foot on that barrel. If you use your right, you're in the clear. Or, at least, you don't "have the Captain in you".

I can't drink rum by itself or mixed with any one liquid. Throw it in a bowl with vodka, tequila, gin, Everclear, and various fruit juices..........well, when I was younger.

Does anyone know the commercial music (classical song) that plays in the new Captain Morgan rum commercial. Everyone in the commercial has their left leg up like Captain Morgan on the bottle of Captain Morgan rum. People are dancing and everything. It appeared late 2005.

hey, you know that song from the capt morgan commercial, its called "radiate" by averagesuperstar???? yeah, i liked that song the first time i heard it, when it was called "flagpole sitter" by harvey danger. look it up!!!!! or go here ----> http://www.myspace.com/hdanger you'll remember the song from late 90s alterna-radio!!!! then sing the verse in your head to that song from the commercial!!!! same chord progression and the melody is almost exactly the same. too bad there are only 12 notes or situations like this could be avoided
