World Press Photo Contest
Winners of the 2006 World Press Photo Contest are in. Some of my favorites:
- Nature: 3rd prize stories: Daniel Beltrá, Spain, for Greenpeace International: Amazon drought - This is quite startling; I had no idea the Amazon was in such bad shape
- Daily Life: Honorable mention: Donald Weber, Canada, Polaris Images: One vodka too many, Chernobyl, Ukraine - Hilarious! But, not
- Daily Life: 3rd prize singles: G. M. B. Akash, Bangladesh: Child labourer in a textile factory, Bangladesh - My eyes and my heart are having hard time resolving this
- Contemporary Issues: 2nd prize singles: Joao Silva, South Africa, The New York Times: Malawi Prison - No words
- Sports Features: 2nd prize singles: David Guttenfelder, USA, The Associated Press: Boys play football, Kabul, Afghanistan - The enormous size and depth of the pool; the height of the high dive; I'm trying to conjure up a mental picture of sparkling blue water, young people in Speedos practicing for summer Olympics; it's not there
