Four Sunday thoughts

Heat wave: We're setting some kind of record this weekend, with temperatures in the 90s. I hate sounding like a big baby, but this heat is unbearable. Wishing for a Canadian low. Not to be confused with a Mexican high. (Paraphrasing George Carlin, circa 1975.)

Memories: It's Memorial Day weekend in the United States. I went to the cemetery early Saturday morning, but it was already too hot to do too much traipsing around. I paid my respects, took one picture, and got out.

Law abiding: Last night about 11:30, I was in my first official police roadblock at 11th and Stevenson. It appeared to be conducted by the Springfield Police Department, the Sangamon County Sheriff, and the Illinois State Police. It's not that I've avoided roadblocks in the past. I just never actually happened upon one. Honest. I tried not to stare, but it looked like the guy in the lane next to me was getting his car searched. Whoopsie.

Banking: It seems like every time I turn around, someone is putting up a new bank building in this town. Unfortunately, none of them look like the Williamsburgh Bank Building in Brooklyn. Breathtaking.

I got caught in a road block once. It was one of those stop-everybody-trying-to-catch-drunks road block. It was about 11:30 PM. Kind of scary especially since I had been drinking. They let me go but I'll always remember that cop shining his flashlight into the car.

I got an email about the road blocks (there were two this weekend) from a friend from the sec. of st., then it was posted on MySpace a dozen times. Amazing how the Internet works.
