New school year

As of right now, this is the first time since forever I don't have a kid in school. That could change.

School started this week here. Am I the only one who remembers when the new school year started the Thursday before Labor Day. This was brilliant calendaring on someone's part. That way, you went a half day the first day, a full day the second day, by which time you were totally burned out on school and ready for a three day weekend. At least, that's what I remember.

I never went to school anywhere that started before Labor Day. In college, we started the Friday after. School starts next Monday for everyone in Maryland. It'll be my last first day of public school.

Up in Crete-Monee Unified School District 201-U, we never went back before the Tuesday after Labor Day. It all goes back to the days when America was an agrarian nation; in our case, we went back to school the day after we had harvested the last of my parents' patience and/or sanity (depending on crop-rotation patterns).

I started first and maybe second grade in September. The school year started in mid to late August every year after. Most schools in Louisiana started on the 17th. There were a few that started later but they're all open now. The thing is ... Louisiana doesn't generally need any weather days. Last year, of course, being the spectacular exception.
