George Ryan sentenced

From almost a year ago (September 19, 2005, George Ryan trial kick off), to just minutes ago:

UPDATE 15: Ryan has been sentenced to 78 months.

Six and a half years. And this:

UPDATE 16: Ryan said that the public expected better from them, “and I let them down.”

A weak apology from the former governor of Illinois. Without admitting guilt. He still does not think he did anything wrong.

UPDATE 17: CBS2: In addition to the prison sentence, Ryan was ordered to pay $603,048 in restitution.
UPDATE 18: Jan. 4 surrender date. Oxford Prison.

I don't think that's affiliated with the University of Oxford.

See the CapitolFax for real time coverage of today's proceedings. Pretty good considering Rich is probably no where near the federal courthouse in Chicago.

Carl Nyberg has a more fitting apology for George Ryan to say and feel:

“I played politics the way I learned the game. I won because I was aggressive. I now realize my aggressiveness went to far. I crossed lines that I shouldn’t have. In the thick of competitiveness, I could justify it. Looking back, I regret those decisions. I was wrong….
“I certainly did not foresee the consequences of people getting killed on the roads of Illinois. What can I say when actions I took and didn’t take were part of a chain of events that led to the deaths of a whole family of children? ‘I’m sorry’ seems inadequate….”

Well said. It's doubtful we'll ever hear anything like that from Ryan. I don't think he has fully grasped that he did anything wrong. I wonder if he will when his wife drops him off at at the gates to Oxford Prison.

My first attempt to Google something on Oxford Prison turns up the castle at Oxford and the old prison at Oxford, which has apparently been turned into a tourist destination. Heh. Still checking. Ah. Got it. It's in Oxford, Wisconsin.

The Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Oxford is a medium security institution for male offenders. An adjacent satellite prison camp houses minimum security male offenders.
FCI Oxford is located in central Wisconsin, 60 miles north of Madison. It is situated off I-39 at the intersection of County Road G and Elk Avenue. (Bureau of Prisons.)

But, nothing about a wing for distinguished 72 year old gentlemen who fell short of expectations.

UPDATE: Eric Zorn has the full text of George Ryan's words to the court. See, George Ryan: `The saddest day in my life.' WARNING! May cause pop-under ads. Yeah, I know.

You're right: A bad show from Ryan, but typical of politicians in the Age of the Weasel.
