Lincoln buzz: Four links
A few Abraham Lincoln things that recently landed in my inbox:
- From a few days ago: Recalling Abraham Lincoln of the Anniversary of the Gettysburg Address, by John Carey.
- LINCOLN RECONSIDERED by David Shribman. An opinion piece where Mr. Shribman expresses some apprehension about the Bicentennial festivities, and offers
twothree alternatives for a better understanding of the 16th president (and who we are - I said that part): (1) Everyone should read a book about the Civil War; (2) Every kid should memorize the Gettysburg Address; and (3) Read both of Lincoln's inaugural addresses, "and to linger, in this time of war, on the very last paragraph of the second inaugural."
- How the Telegraph Helped Lincoln Win the Civil War, by Tom Wheeler. Mr. Wheeler is the author of Mr. Lincoln’s T-Mails: The Untold Story of How Abraham Lincoln Used the Telegraph to Win the Civil War (HarperCollins, 2006).
- Understanding Lincoln’s Genius with Words, by Christine Gibson. A review of two new Lincoln books: (1) Lincoln’s Sword: The Presidency and the Power of Words (Knopf, 352 pages, $26.95); and (2) The Gettysburg Gospel: The Lincoln Speech That Nobody Knows (Simon & Schuster, 432 pages, $28).
Things are picking up.
