Unfunny girl

There are many instances where I find myself uproariously funny. But, sadly, rarely does anyone else. Is it because I'm female? Quite possibly so, according to Christopher Hitchens writing for Vanity Fair (Why Women Aren't Funny).

What it boils down to, as hysterically asserted by Mr. Hitchens, is, women have the higher calling of childbearing. Perhaps because they're so perpetually consumed with the prospect of giving birth, and the during and aftermath thereof, being funny is just not possible. In any event, women are off the hook.

Whereas, men, well, they better be funny, or else:

Why are men, taken on average and as a whole, funnier than women? Well, for one thing, they had damn well better be. The chief task in life that a man has to perform is that of impressing the opposite sex, and Mother Nature (as we laughingly call her) is not so kind to men. In fact, she equips many fellows with very little armament for the struggle. An average man has just one, outside chance: he had better be able to make the lady laugh. [...]

It's quite a thought provoking article. And, yeah, he made me laugh.

Via, amusingly enough, Greg at the Illinois Policy Institute.

Here's the book-end piece to the article by Hitchens (whom I find to be an insufferable jerk and unduly impressed by himself):

Dan, your parenthetical description of Hitch is right-on... I mean, left-on!!

Marie... Do you know Mr. Blankenship? Spontaneous Solutions is one of the weblogs I have been reading this year (though not nearly as much as I should), even while having been out of the Blogosphere loop, due to CRs, the elections, and a bunch of other stuff). This is Finals Week, and I am so far behind by now, but next week, I need to contact Greg again, to see what's the latest with the IPI... I haven't heard back from them in awhile - though another one of our CR members is applying for an internship there.

I can't vouch for your stand-up shtick, Marie, but your blog comments are hilarious.

I didn't find it all that insightful or funny, either, which I suppose is one of the points he tried to make. Analyzing funny is almost never funny to me.

About your comedic talents, Marie, what Kem said.
