We had signal

For the last several months, we've been hearing voices. A mostly inaudible, electronic, static-y sounding voice. We would only hear the voice briefly, occasionally, and, only when Allie was standing in a certain place. It's been quite unnerving.

The best I could figure was, some piece of electronic equipment in this house was receiving a radio signal and broadcasting it over the computer speakers. We considered the source to be either someone talking on a nearby cordless or cell phone, perhaps a police band radio, or some kind of tow truck dispatcher.

It also occurred to me that the Lincolnshire Poacher had found its way to Central Illinois and Allie was somehow involved. Although, unknowingly involved (to give her the benefit of the doubt). But I never shared this thought with her, until now, so as not to spook her. Okay, I'm getting a little off track here.

Anyway, we heard it again this evening. Allie was standing in the usual place when we heard it. I said, stop! Do what you just did. And, she flung her arms a little and moved her feet. And we heard it again. I told her to do those movements again. And, again, we heard the voice. She repeated this over and over until we were better able to identify the source.

And identify the source we did. This is pretty funny. A measuring tape that has record/talk functions had gotten lodged between the table leg and the wall. Every time she bumped the table leg with her foot, it triggered the playback button.

She retrieved the talking tape measure and we kept playing it back until we figured out what was being said and by whom. After listening over and over, we were finally able to discern my brother saying "32 feet," and my other daughter saying "24 feet."

I'm thinking Allie and I should hire ourselves out to other households who might be experiencing strange voices. Just a thought.

Shucks and I was expecting an explanation of a poltergeist.

Think there's any money in that?

But Marie the digital recorder didn't have any batteries!

Now that's scary.
