Springfield pirates

From today's SJR, Police find alleged bootlegs of CDs, DVDs:

Springfield police Thursday showed off more than 1,700 alleged bootleg compact discs and DVDs and copying equipment they say were seized last week at Offtop Records, 1503 E. Ash St.
Police spokesman Sgt. Pat Ross said the department had received information from businesses selling legitimate CDs and DVDs about possible copyright infringement problems at the store. After an investigation, police executed a search warrant Jan. 9.
Ross said a handgun and a small amount of marijuana also were seized.
No one has been arrested or charged in connection with the allegedly pirated discs, but Springfield police and the FBI are continuing their joint investigation. Illegally copying CDs and DVDs can be a federal offense.
Ross said "some individuals" were detained briefly after the raid but were then released.
Assistant police chief Ralph Caldwell called the case "very unique" for the department and praised the role undercover detectives played in the investigation.
Among the items displayed Thursday was a machine Ross said could duplicate nine CDs or DVDs at a time.
He said the store was selling the CDs at $2 each and the DVD movies at about $6 apiece. He said the store would obtain a legitimate copy of the CD or DVD and display it, then copy the disc if a customer requested a certain title.
Among the DVD titles allegedly seized were "Felony Fights," "Cocaine Country: Manuel Noriega," "Hip-Hop Laws of Success," "Gangbangers For Life" and "Stop Snitchin'."

This is not too far from my house. Despite the fact that the store also sells snacks munchies, I've never shopped there.

Just spotted the Noriega title there, and thought I would note I was once offered a position as a secretary by one of his defense team. I turned down the job. Not that this has anything to do with the topic. Just noting.

Is that a pun? Finding Maryjane and refering to it as a "joint" investigation?

Good catch, Randy. I just changed "snacks" to "munchies" in your honor.

Hi Marie,

Just dropping by in case you haven't had a chance to revisit the comment thread on the Random Stuff post -- I do indeed remember you, though it took you asking to confirm that I wasn't just a crazed person assuming that the Internet was a small enough place to reconnect with someone from the "long past", at least in Internet years. :)
