My cousins in the U.S. Senate

Some years ago while doing genealogy research, the name Durbin came up in my family tree about five generations up the line. Deeper research was conducted, but I could never actually make a rock solid direct connection between our family and U.S. Senator Dick Durbin. Of course, Durbin has a very obvious Illinois connection, as do we, and, being that he was born in East Saint Louis, adds to the possibility of a relationship.

I did talk to a shirt tale relation who talked to another shirt tale relation in Pike County who said that Durbin showed up on his doorstep many years before on a campaign for Paul Simon. This relation, too, knew about the connection and asked Durbin if he knew of a relationship. But, he didn't.

Anyway, despite the lack of evidence, I've since considered Dick Durbin to be my cousin.

Now this week, I learned that Senator Barack Obama's mother's maiden name is Dunham. Well, guess what? That name is also in my family tree five or six generations back. I'm not doing any research at this time, so I don't know if there's a connection. There probably isn't. But, you never know. So, until I find out otherwise, I'm claiming him as my cousin, too.

My grandma was some sort of distant cousin to Herbert Hoover from their days in Iowa.

I didn't know you were so well-connected, Marie. If Barack ends up in the White House, will you be blogging from the West Wing?
