SJ-R changes online presence [updated]
Our local newspaper, the State Journal-Register has made some much needed and asked for changes in its online edition. From the online editor's blog:
- "No more subscriber accounts or passwords. Everything we’re going to offer on the site is available to everyone."
- Social bookmarking links on articles for Digg, Newsvine, del.icio.us, reddit and Facebook. (No word yet if this means articles will stay on line longer than the usual week or so.)
- And, my absolute favorite part of the newspaper: Letters to the Editor now free to all!
It took a long time for Abraham Lincoln's hometown newspaper to get this far. (Way to go Jason Piscia!) I am quite certain these changes will be good for us readers. I hope they are for the paper, too.
UPDATE Sunday July 8, 2007: Billy Dennis a/k/a Peoria Pundit picks up the discussion and argues in favor of paying for online newspaper articles. I think at least one commenter in Jason's blog (OE) also wants to pay.

Thanks for the mention. Also thanks for reminding me that I forgot to mention our story links will no longer die after a month or so as they have in the past, something we needed to do if we wanted to get involved with Digg, etc. We'll be keeping a couple weeks' worth of stories available for headline browsing on the index pages. In the coming weeks, we'll be adding a new story search function that'll allow you to look for content before that.
