More youthful desperation

Practically on the heels of the two teen girls who held up a gift store last week, we now have:

Boy with gun robs woman, police say
A boy who appeared to be in his early teens robbed a woman at gunpoint Wednesday afternoon outside the Sangamon Schools Credit Union, 1420 S. Eighth St., police said.
The woman, an employee of the credit union, had just gotten off work about 1:30 p.m. when the robbery occurred. She was sitting in her car, which was parked on Eighth Street nearby, said Lt. Clay Dowis of the Springfield Police Department.
Initially, the youth asked the woman for the time. He then stuck a black handgun through the window and demanded that she hand over her money.
The victim complied, and the boy fled on foot in a southwesterly direction.
Authorities attempted to track the youth using a police dog, but he could not be located.
He was described as black, about 5 feet, 4 inches tall with a thin build. He was wearing a light blue polo shirt and dark jeans.
“It’s not unheard of, but it’s unusual,” Dowis said of the robber’s apparent young age.

Un-freaking-real. Even more unreal are all the gun comments in the SJ-R article. This is about so much more than guns. Damn. This is about a child who is, dare I say, ruined. Let's hope he gets caught and gets the help he needs. And, let us hope his parents get straightened out in the process.

I'm glad young criminals are still unusual in the midwest. A robbery like that wouldn't even make it in to the papers in Baltimore. Gang activity is sharply growing around here and the youth crimes we read about are much more tragic.
