Abe gets head*

I've been enjoying some photos of beautiful Lithia Park not far from Ashland, Oregon. Just inside the entrance to the park is a statue of Abraham Lincoln which appears to be made from white granite or even marble.

Anyway. thieves stole Abe's head sometime last year. Fortunately, his head has been restored thanks to a generous donor who commissioned the new head.

It's interesting, but not surprising, that there's a statue of the 16th President in a park in Oregon. What's more interesting, though, is somewhere Abe's original head is out there just waiting to be photographed and put on the internet.

*I know that was totally unnecessary, but I couldn't help it. What.

Somebody gaffled Abe's noggin? That blows.

Lithia Park is right in Ashland -- which is an interesting little town split between its ancient heritage as a logging and ranching center and its current position as artsy-fartsy tourist-dependent host of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and a pretty big "alternative lifestyle" community (old hippies, New Agers, crystal gazers, and the like).

Anyway, Lithia Park: It's a beautiful wooded place, with a mountain creek tumbling down through the middle of it. I've seen Lincoln, both with and without head, and I've been struck by his presence there, too. The story is that a son of the town donated the piece in 1915 or 1916 in honor of his step-father, who was reportedly a strong pro-Union man at the time of the Civil War. But Abe's attracting some unfriendly attention up there now: In June, someone planted a fake bomb at the base of the statue.

As far as the head goes, the new one is the fourth since the thing was sculpted. There are actually two new ones -- the donor and the city apparently anticipate more Lincoln-related shenanigans. And there's a mini-controversy over the fact the donors had the heads cast in China rather than Oregon or the U.S.A. somewhere. Next time I go through there, I'll check on the new head and report back. ...

Excellent information, Dan. Abe sure does come with his controversies. I still find it highly interesting that they were always there, I just never knew about them before the internet.
