Hop on the bus, Gus

Effective December 3rd, Springfield will finally be getting its much needed night bus service. (SJR: Evening bus service to begin Monday.) Some people (see the comments in the article) think this is a waste of money. Other people think it's a good idea (Dave of the 11th Hour). This is a major event for the Springfield Mass Transit District, which has been slow to make any radical changes to its service.

Maybe it's a good time for the SMTD to make even more changes. Along those lines, there's a new blog in town devoted solely to the SMTD, which has some very good ideas (Better Springfield Transit; tagline: Because you gotta get there!). The blog is written by a 19 year-old who describes himself as a "UIS Capital Scholar Honors Student in the Class of 2010 aiming for a BA in Liberal Studies emphasizing in city management and urban planning." (This may be Springfield's first niche blog devoted solely to something in Springfield.) Regarding the current system:

*In 1968, 90% of all shopping and employment was in the downtown area. Most people used the bus to get to work and shop because parking was limited at this time and people were still accustomed to using a trolley system which had the same idea.
*Now we are in 2007, living in a city which quite honestly has sprawled away from our downtown, and the pulse system as it stands makes some trips to the main shopping areas nearly 70 minutes long at times. [...]

He may very well have hit the nail on the head. I hope the people at SMTD are reading his blog and I hope he keeps up with it.
