My Wal-Mart experience

It seems everyone has something to say about Wal-Mart, or the people who shop there, or the people who talk about the people who shop there:

As I recently told Johann, I went there once. I should have said, I went inside once. It was a long time ago, and as my shopping cart got stuck between the circular racks of clothing in the ladies' department, I began to black out. My throat seized up, my heart was pounding through my chest, my hands were shaking, and my legs were melting under me. Plus, I felt my sanity start to slip away, a la Inspector Clouseau. It was all I could do to get out of that place. And, I knew I could never go back.

Then, a couple years later, the need arose to return. It was a miserably hot and humid summer day. The girls and I decided, or maybe it was just them, that we needed a swimming pool for relief. Apparently, everyone else in town needed a swimming pool on that day, because every place I called was out, except the last place I called: Wal-Mart.

So, I loaded the girls in the car and we went to the one in Parkway Pointe (the only one at the time). As I parked the car and handed them the $20.00, I instructed them to ask directions to the swimming pool department as soon as they walked in the door, stay together, don't dawdle, don't talk to strangers, get the pool, go straight to the check-out, and immediately return to the car. I made them repeat the instructions back to me. I hugged them and kissed them and told them how much I loved them. And, as I sat in the car and watched my beloved little girls merrily skipping in the front door to Wal-Mart to buy their new swimming pool, I knew I was taking a big chance. But, I just couldn't go in there.

I really miss those girls.

Best ending to a story, ever, I think. :)
