A simple supper

Rice, presumably. Circa, mid-1940s. Or maybe early 1930s. No way to tell.

I like their hats, especially that guy looking into the camera. Maybe it's not a hat. Maybe it's a bandage.

What was happening here? Where is this?

From the Carnes archives. Photographer unknown.

Although it's hard to tell for sure, it looks like the guy in the middle is wearing a WWII era Japanese military cap.

I agree with Dave -- Japanese soldiers, and probably well into World War II. The guy in the middle appears to be eating his rice from a banana leaf. All three seem to be wearing combat footgear -- even the guy on the right. That rag he's wearing on his head is something I've seen in pictures of Japanese peasants; I believe it's kept wet to cool you off in hot weather. You wonder if they had been captured at this point or this is a Japanese snapshot that was picked up somewhere.

They look Japanese. The cap is a give away. WWII. What is going on? Slow starvation probably. I have some WWII photos from a family member and should post a few. Good idea Marie. JP
