Presidential Illinoisans

The SJ-R's Doug Finke has compiled a list of people with ties to Illinois who have found their way onto the ballot for president of the United States:

At least 15 people, including Hillary Rodham Clinton, with Illinois roots have sought the presidency. Most, like Elihu Washburne, Everett McKinley Dirksen, Paul Simon and Jesse Jackson, never survived the nominating process. Here are the ones who did:
  • Abraham Lincoln
  • Stephen A. Douglas
  • Ulysses S. Grant
  • William Jennings Bryan
  • Adlai Stevenson
  • Ronald Reagan
  • John B. Anderson

And now we have Barack Obama. Maybe. I guess it's not a sure thing until the convention.

Read the article, Illinoisans who made the ballot before Obama, for the background on each of the candidates. One of the commenters observed, "it looks like Republicans have had much more luck than Democrats in getting to the White House." True.
