Get the guns, Abe

... and shoot! That's what 19 year old Abraham Lincoln's flatboat mate shouted when the two of them were ambushed by thieves on the Mississippi. Scared at the prospect of being shot, the thieves fled. Abe and his buddy had no weapons, though.

When Abraham Lincoln traveled by flatboat from Rockport, Ind., to New Orleans in 1828, the journey was powered by the flow of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers.

But when a group of Spencer County residents take off Sept. 9, retracing Lincoln's journey in a 60-foot pioneer-style flatboat, they'll have two 150-hp Mercury Verado outboard motors worth $26,000 donated by the Wisconsin-based manufacturer.

They'll also have the loan of a Sequoia SUV from Toyota's Princeton, Ind., plant, which will serve as a support vehicle during the month-long journey.

Those modern flatboaters.... According to the article (Evansville Courier Press: Lincoln flatboat will have some horsepower), "modern waterways necessitate a bit of modernization, so the motors will come in handy." But, still, what an adventure.

Via and via (where I stole the "get the guns" story).
