Highways and byways

The International Route 66 Mother Road Festival is in town this weekend. They are expecting 1000 classic cars and I don't know how many visitors. In years past, there have been estimates of 30,000 attendees. The cruise, which starts tonight at 6:00 p.m., is awesome to see. Just don't get stuck in it.

Speaking of storied highways, on October 29, 2008, PBS will air a special on the Lincoln Highway, a/k/a U.S. Route 30. The Lincoln Highway went from Times Square in New York City to Lincoln Park in San Francisco. I've driven it back and forth from Valpo to Joliet many times. It's like swimming in mud when you need to get somewhere quickly. But, I love it anyway. Can't wait to see the show.

If you can't make it to the Mother Road or the Lincoln Highway, I hear U.S. Route 20, which runs from Boston to Newport, Oregon is especially lovely across New York State.

This concludes our highway report for this weekend.
